TROUBLESHOOTING
_______________________________________________
This file describes common questions and answers that might help in resolving
problems in playing Lexicon. If you encounter any problems, please refer to this
file before contacting customer support.
GENERAL ISSUES
______________
Q: When I try to run Lexicon, I get a message saying that the file DPLAYX.DLL
cannot be found. Why?
A: The file DPLAYX.DLL is a part of DirectX, and this message means that you
do not have DirectX installed on your machine. You will need to install
DirectX on your machine before being able to run Lexicon. See the DirectX
section below for more information.
PERFORMANCE-RELATED ISSUES
__________________________
Q: When I run Lexicon, the game appears very sluggish, and the sounds crackle.
What's the problem?
A: DirectX appears to have a compatibility problem with hardware acceleration
and some video cards. One way to resolve this is to reduce or turn off the
use of hardware acceleration by DirectX. This can be accomplished as follows:
Select the "System" icon in your Windows 95 control panel (from "My Computer").
In the "System Properties" sheet, select the "Performance" tab. Select the
"Graphics" button from the Advanced settings section. Slide the
"hardware acceleration" slider all the way to the left ("None"). Then select
the Ok buttons to exit the dialogs and record your changes.
This may decrease the performance of some other DirectX games, but you can
always switch the setting back if you find it unacceptable.
Q: I've noticed that the game slows down at times. What can I do?
A: In Windows 95, some background programs or scheduled tasks can impact game
performance. You can try to exit some of the other programs that are currently
running on your system. Press 'CTRL-ALT-DEL' to view a listing of all programs
that are currently running. If you are sure you can safely exit a particular
program, select it from the list and press the 'END TASK' button. Be careful
though! You can crash or hang your computer by closing a program that Windows 95
is dependent on. Refer to your Windows 95 users manual to configure your machine
for optimal performance.
AUDIO-RELATED ISSUES

Q: I try to change the volume of the music, but nothing seems to happen.
A: Lexicon uses the MIDI device in your sound card to play music. Some sound cards
do not support MIDI volume control, and therefore are unable to alter the volume
of music played in this manner. However, you can at least turn off the music by
setting the volume slider all the way to the left.
DIRECTX-RELATED ISSUES

Q: What is DirectX?
A: DirectX is a set of files (drivers) created by Microsoft that can be installed
on your computer to allow faster game performance, standardized setup and
communications procedures, and improved compatibility for many new software titles.
Many of the latest computer games for Windows 95 require the use of DirectX.
If you do not have DirectX 5.0 or later installed on your computer, then you
will need to obtain the latest DirectX drivers and install them.
The latest version of the DirectX drivers can be found on Microsoft's web site at:
www.microsoft.com/directx
Note: You do not need to download the DirectX SDK. You only need the end-user
DirectX drivers.
Q: Why do I need DirectX?
A: Lexicon was written to use DirectX, and therefore requires the drivers to be
installed on your machine. Installing DirectX is a good idea in general, as many
other new software titles require DirectX as well.
