  10. This file describes common questions and answers that might help in resolving
  11. problems in playing Lexicon. If you encounter any problems, please refer to this 
  12. file before contacting customer support.

  16. GENERAL ISSUES

  19. Q: When I try to run Lexicon, I get a message saying that the file DPLAYX.DLL
  20.    cannot be found. Why?
  21.  
  22. A: The file DPLAYX.DLL is a part of DirectX, and this message means that you
  23.    do not have DirectX installed on your machine. You will need to install
  24.    DirectX on your machine before being able to run Lexicon. See the DirectX
  25.    section below for more information.

  29. PERFORMANCE-RELATED ISSUES

  32. Q: When I run Lexicon, the game appears very sluggish, and the sounds crackle.
  33.    What's the problem?
  34.  
  35. A: DirectX appears to have a compatibility problem with hardware acceleration 
  36.    and some video cards. One way to resolve this is to reduce or turn off the
  37.    use of hardware acceleration by DirectX. This can be accomplished as follows:

  39.    Select the "System" icon in your Windows 95 control panel (from "My Computer"). 
  40.    In the "System Properties" sheet, select the "Performance" tab. Select the 
  41.    "Graphics" button from the Advanced settings section. Slide the 
  42.    "hardware acceleration" slider all the way to the left ("None"). Then select 
  43.    the Ok buttons to exit the dialogs and record your changes.

  45.    This may decrease the performance of some other DirectX games, but you can 
  46.    always switch the setting back if you find it unacceptable.

  49. Q: I've noticed that the game slows down at times. What can I do?
  50.  
  51. A: In Windows 95, some background programs or scheduled tasks can impact game 
  52.    performance. You can try to exit some of the other programs that are currently 
  53.    running on your system. Press 'CTRL-ALT-DEL' to view a listing of all programs 
  54.    that are currently running. If you are sure you can safely exit a particular 
  55.    program, select it from the list and press the 'END TASK' button. Be careful 
  56.    though! You can crash or hang your computer by closing a program that Windows 95 
  57.    is dependent on. Refer to your Windows 95 users manual to configure your machine 
  58.    for optimal performance.

  65. Q: I try to change the volume of the music, but nothing seems to happen.
  66.  
  67. A: Lexicon uses the MIDI device in your sound card to play music. Some sound cards 
  68.    do not support MIDI volume control, and therefore are unable to alter the volume 
  69.    of music played in this manner. However, you can at least turn off the music by 
  70.    setting the volume slider all the way to the left.

  77. Q: What is DirectX?
  78.  
  79. A: DirectX is a set of files (drivers) created by Microsoft that can be installed 
  80.    on your computer to allow faster game performance, standardized setup and 
  81.    communications procedures, and improved compatibility for many new software titles. 
  82.    Many of the latest computer games for Windows 95 require the use of DirectX. 
  83.    If you do not have DirectX 5.0 or later installed on your computer, then you 
  84.    will need to obtain the latest DirectX drivers and install them.

  86.    The latest version of the DirectX drivers can be found on Microsoft's web site at:

  89.    Note: You do not need to download the DirectX SDK. You only need the end-user 
  90.    DirectX drivers.

  93. Q: Why do I need DirectX?

  95. A: Lexicon was written to use DirectX, and therefore requires the drivers to be 
  96.    installed on your machine. Installing DirectX is a good idea in general, as many 
  97.    other new software titles require DirectX as well.
